Be of Good Courage

“Courage is not action in the absence of fear but rather action in the presence of fear.” Mark Twain.

It is comforting to know that Joshua the successor of Moses was in need of confidence. Four times in Joshua chapter one God tells his young leader “be strong and of good courage.” Joshua's need of courage should encourage all of us. There are four dimensions to Joshua's God given encouragement.

Be courageous for the people

“Be strong and of good courage, for…this people….” (Josh 1:6). Joshua was called to be courageous for the sake of all the people who were watching his life . There are people watching you. Our courage infects and affects everyone around us, be courageous for the sake of the people.

Be courageous for yourself

“Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law…” (Josh 1:7) Joshua's obedience to God produced courage in himself. When we act couragesly in kingdom purposes we feel good about ourselves.

God therefore says be courageous for you. Are you encouraged by your own acts of courage? You need to be. God wants you to be.

Be courageous for the Lord

“Be strong and of good courage...for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Josh 1:9)

The people are watching you, you are watching you and God is also watching you. Be courageous for Him, show Him your love, through courageous acts of ministry. As Christians we should always play to an audience of one. Seek the applause and approval of heaven rather than the fleeting accolades of earth.

Be courageous for the enemy

“Whoever rebels against your command….shall be put to death. Only be strong and of good courage.
(Josh 1:17)

The people are watching you, you are watching you, God is watching you and the enemy is watching you as well. Joshua was surrounded by enemies. The devil sought Joshua's destruction. You have an enemy who is also committed to your undoing. Do you realize that acts of courage in obedience to God in the very face of fear are as acid to Satan's design.

It does matter whether you are courageous or not. It matters to the people. It matter to you personally. It matters to God. And it matters to your enemies.
